Health Issues in the Rattery - PH Amber and Tumors

In the past, I posted on my blog about an issue with a line of rats that I'd been breeding. I realize that this particular post will be hard to locate now - so I am dedicating a page to this issue. Some of these rats have gone to other breeders, and I know there must be some breeders working with the lines that I don't know about. So hopefully this will help get the word out to everyone!

There has been a big problem with tumors in rats descending from PH Amber. Her direct descendants include PH Misty and PH Mojo. Before the problem became prevalent, these rats were bred for an additional 2 generations. Some of their offspring include PH Sterling, PH Hailey, and PH Chunky Monkey. There are also rats from these lines that went to other breeders in the area.

Since the tumors did not develop until the rats were over a year old, it took some time to see that the issue was definitely genetic and was widespread throughout this family of rats. Not all rats developed tumors, but I would estimate that at least 50% of the females developed tumors at a fairly young age, and a number of the males did as well. The worst of the tumors was throughout the direct female line from Amber. Amber did not develop tumors herself (and neither did her mother), but many of her daughters, granddaughters, etc did. The tumors were not as severe through the male line - through PH Chunky Monkey, but there have been more than I was comfortable with. The last rat living here from these lines passed away in July of 2011.

The last litter from this line was born in July of 2009. After that, a number of issues with tumors started coming in, and I realized I needed to end this line of rats. They were beautiful rats with great temperaments, but the tumor issue was just huge and I could not continue breeding them.

This page is not meant to scare future/potential adopters - NONE of Amber's descendants are being bred here anymore. But it is to ensure that the word is out (especially to other breeders who may be working with these lines) about the issues with this family of rats.

I have to apologize to adopters who had issues with these rats - unfortunately breeding is not a perfect science, and all we can do when we make mistakes is to do our best to fix them.

Here are a few pedigrees of example rats from this line...
